The port authority bus is the name of a terminal for buses in America. This terminal is the chief entrance way for buses for Manhattan in New York. Its control is in the hands of authorities of New York and New Jersey. It is the biggest terminal for buses in America which serves more than 185000 passengers every day. It is situated in midtown on the 42nd street from Times Square. The terminal started its operation in 1950 at that time it was served as the need of the hour for the people of Manhattan and New York. Till now it has the biggest building in the midtown area. The main objective of having a terminal of this status was to centralize the movement of buses and make it better for commuters. The terminal has been expanded in area since its beginning almost to the double it had before.

This terminal is the busiest one on earth in terms of number of commuters in a single day. More than 7200 buses pass by this port authority bus terminal everyday. During the time when there is heavy traffic on the main road the bus lane of the terminal which is approximately 3 kilometers, accommodates the buses from the Lincoln tunnel directly into the terminal. This saves a lot of time for the passengers. Earlier it was termed as the favorite place for criminal activity but now the government has taken care of this very seriously and the criminal activities have decreased almost too negligible. Now it has complimented the Times Square area in terms of infrastructure and security.

The clean up activity of the government has indeed raised the standard of the port authority bus as there was a survey among the passengers about the security and reduction in criminal activity there and around 76% gave a positive answer about the terminal. There has been a complete revamp in its infrastructure too with a completely new style and design which serves the commuters in a better way. The transportation facilities have also improved a lot and now they are better equipped than before.

This terminal has been among the best public serving places in New York. In recent times its reputation has been tarnished because of recent criminal activities there which have existed since along time but things have improved a lot for the betterment of people. The building of the terminal is among the landmarks of New York and hopefully will improve a lot in coming times.
